Brother Matthew, OSF

1923 - 2007

“God bless you Matthew,”

“He already has.”

When evening settles over St. Joseph’s Hill and the sun sets behind the Western hills, Matthew locks up his studio and goes inside, where patients are retiring for the night. Down a darkening corridor floats the sound of laughter, followed by the soft tread of sandaled feet. Silhouetted against each doorway light, a man in a monk’s habit can be seen moving from room to room. He turns, makes a final gesture of farewell, and moves toward the stairwell. An elderly voice calls out, “God bless you, Matthew,” and Matthew Gallagher whispers softly to himself, “He already has.”
